Madeleine L’Engle, Writer of Children’s Classics, Is Dead at 88

By DOUGLAS MARTIN
Published: September 8, 2007
Madeleine L’Engle, who in writing more than 60 books, including childhood fables, religious meditations and science fiction, weaved emotional tapestries transcending genre and generation, died Thursday in Connecticut. She was 88.

Her death, of natural causes, was announced today by her publisher, Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Ms. L’Engle (pronounced LENG-el) was best known for her children’s classic, “A Wrinkle in Time,” which won the John Newbery Award as the best children’s book of 1963. By 2004, it had sold more than 6 million copies, was in its 67th printing and was still selling 15,000 copies a year.

Her works — poetry, plays, autobiography and books on prayer — were deeply, quixotically personal. But it was in her vivid children’s characters that readers most clearly glimpsed her passionate search for the questions that mattered most. She sometimes spoke of her writing as if she were taking dictation from her subconscious.

“Of course I’m Meg,” Ms. L’Engle said about the beloved protagonist of “A Wrinkle in Time.”

The “St. James Guide to Children’s Writers” called Ms. L’Engle “one of the truly important writers of juvenile fiction in recent decades.” Such accolades did not come from pulling punches: “Wrinkle” is one of the most banned books because of its treatment of the deity.

“It was a dark and stormy night,” it begins, repeating the line of a 19th- century novelist Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, and presaging the immortal sentence that Snoopy, the inspiration-challenged beagle of the Peanuts cartoon, would type again and again. After the opening, “Wrinkle,” quite literally, takes off. Meg Murray, with help from her psychic baby brother, uses time travel and extrasensory perception to rescue her father, a gifted scientist, from a planet controlled by the Dark Thing. She does so through the power of love.

The book used concepts that Ms. L’Engle said she had plucked from Einstein’s theory of relativity and Planck’s quantum theory, almost flaunting her frequent assertion that children’s literature is literature too difficult for adults to understand. She also characterized the book as her refutation of ideas of German theologians.

In the “Dictionary of Literary Biography,” Marygail G. Parker notes “a peculiar splendor” in Ms. L’Engle’s oeuvre, and some of that splendor is sheer literary range. “Wrinkle” is part of her series of children’s books, which includes “A Wind in the Door,” “A Swiftly Tilting Planet,” “Many Waters” and “An Acceptable Time.” The series combines elements of science fiction with insights into love and moral purpose that pervade Ms. L’Engle’s writing.

Ms. L’Engle’s other famous series of books concerned another family. The first installment, “Meet the Austins,” which appeared in 1960, portrayed an affectionate family whose members displayed enough warts to make them interesting. (Perhaps not enough for The Times Literary Supplement in London, though; it called the Austins “too good to be real.”)

By the fourth of the five Austin books, “A Ring of Endless Light,” any hint of Pollyanna was gone. Named a Newbery Honor Book in 1981, it told of a 16-year-old girl’s first experience with death. Telepathic communication with dolphins eventually helps the girl, Vicky, achieve a new understanding of things.

“The cosmic battle between light and darkness, good and evil, love and indifference, personified in the mythic fantasies of the ‘Wrinkle in Time’ series, here is waged compellingly in its rightful place: within ourselves,” Carol Van Strum wrote in The Washington Post in 1980.

Madeleine L’Engle Camp was born in Manhattan on the snowy night of Nov. 29, 1918. The only child of Madeleine Hall Barnett and Charles Wadsworth Camp, she was named for her great-grandmother, who was also named Madeleine L’Engle.

Young Madeleine’s mother came from Jacksonville, Fla., society and was a fine pianist; her father was a World War I veteran who worked as a foreign correspondent and later as drama and music critic for The New York Sun. He also knocked out potboiler novels.

The family lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan; her parents had artistic friends, Madeleine an English nanny. She felt unpopular at school. She recalled that an elementary school teacher – Miss Pepper or Miss Salt, she couldn’t remember which — treated her as if she were stupid.

She had written her first story at 5 and retreated into writing. When she won a poetry contest in the fifth grade, her teacher accused her of plagiarizing. Her mother intervened to prove her innocence, lugging a stack of her stories from home.

When she was 12, she was sent to a boarding school in Switzerland, Chatelard, and at 15 to Ashley Hall, a boarding school in Charleston, S.C. She graduated from Smith College with honors in English. (She took no science, often a surprise

Customer Review:
I've had trouble sleeping because of background noise for years. I finally bought this because I live in a duplex and my neighbors are loud and erratic in behavior, arguing and moving furniture around at 3:00 am. I was afraid to even try to sleep at home after several days with little sleep and my roommate made me buy this because I was ready to move out. This product is great. It makes a very fan-like sound, but with no mechanical or cycling sounds, or rattling. This is just a constant whoosh. It has two speeds and you can change the sound of the whoosh by changing the postition of the vent holes on the device. It has a switch right on the side of it, not on the cord so it's easy to use. It's even padded on the bottom to make sure it doesn't vibrate. I used the low setting last night and slept through the night for the first time in the month since the crazy animals downstairs moved in. I've been relying on ceiling fans and box fans for background noise for years, this is much better. It's a fuller sound, it covers more, and it doesn't make me cold. As many others have said in previous reviews, this is unlike those pre-recorded white noise sounds. This cannot repeat, because it's actually making the sound as you hear it. I travel for a living and stay in a lot of hotels. I look forward to taking this thing with me and blocking out the sounds of neighbor's TV's and talking and vehicles, etc. . . It's very small and lightweight, and seems durable.

Sleeping beauty

Sleeping beauty

She fell asleep in my lap tonight before I could actually put her to bed. I guess it was an eventful day that tired her out... And I just didn't want to move her for a while.

It's really incredible that I can just sit here and watch Lyra sleep, and be pretty happy doing so. She looks so peaceful, and I feel like I could make all the noise in the world and she wouldn't wake up, but I still want to sit here and just... watch her sleep.

I didn't really get it before -- just how it feels to love someone this way. It's entirely different from anything I've ever felt before. I feel physical pain if I think about anything terrible happening to her. My breath catches in my throat if I imagine her getting hurt, and my heart breaks into uncounted millions of shards if I venture into thinking about somehow losing her. It's a pain I can't explain to anyone who isn't a parent, and if you are, then it doesn't need an explanation. It just is, and I can't imagine life without her, or that feeling.

Maybe it's a bit like an elite club, but it's not that I don't want people to join -- It's my hope that anyone who wishes to can live this experience, letting us share (even if it's not spoken aloud) the knowledge that this is a strange, challenging, and ultimately rewarding club to join -- the most rewarding and challenging experience of my life.

So many people who were already in the club told me that I wouldn't get it until I was there. I knew they were right then; now I know just how right they were, and exactly what they meant.

I can't explain it... if you know what I'm talking about, then maybe someday we'll have a cup of tea and talk about it, but I really don't know that there's much to say... it just is. You know what I mean.

So good night my sleeping beauty, I'll miss you while you're gone, and I'll be so happy to see you in the morning -- and you won't understand what I mean until you grow up and maybe have a baby of your own.

Thank you for making me your mom.

Baby Bunny

Baby Bunny

I am so tired, I am going back to bed.
Before I had a coffee or anything,
Mom was telling me there was a bunny in the backyard.

I stepped outside like a zombie, with camera.
I chanted, "Bunny bunny bunny bunny..."
My theory was, this way it knew I was coming
and would not think I was sneaking up to it.
The baby bunny let me get really close.
I used the zoom on the camera.

To give you an idea of proportion, those are regular sized bricks.

The bunny fled swiftly when I stopped making noise.
I guess my theory worked this time.

Time to go back to sleep.
I just wanted to post this because it surprised me that the baby bunny posed.

...I will be on later.

"This Chambers Family at Haggs Farm " text was previously on-line at the now defunct Geocities dhltohaggs website .

In 1898 when John Leivers had decided to end his tenancy of Haggs Farm there were six applications to take it up.They included men from Hucknall,Blidworth and Awsworth. The successful applicant was Edmund Chambers of Breach Road , Eastwood and it was during his tenacy, that lasted until 1910 , that the farm's association with D H Lawrence developed. Edmund Chambers had been born on Breach Road in 1863 where both his father Jonathon and grandfather William had been in business as grocers and pawnbrokers. One of Edmund's first jobs appears to have been as a grocery assistant in Nottingham, where the 1881 census records him as an eighteen years old boarder with Henry Hunt at Penrhyon Terrace. His employment as a provision merchant's assistant was at Burton's of Smithy Row,a high-class Nottingham grocery. On December 4th that same year he married Sarah Oates a twenty-two years old lace hand who at the date of the census had been living with her parents David and Jane at Ortgen Street,Nottingham. On the marriage certificate,Edmund is described as a "provision merchant" and his father as a "gentleman"! The first two children by the marriage,Alan and May,were born in Mapperly near Nottingham in 1882 and 1883, but by the time daughter Jessie was born in January 1887 the family were living in Netherfield on the eastern fringe of the city where Edmund was running a grocery shop. In 1890 the family were in Caythorpe in Lincolnshire but their stay there was short for the 1891 census shows Edmund back in Eastwood and living in the Breach near his widowed mother Elizabeth who was still running the grocery store.Edmund's occupation is recorded as general labourer though at some time before the the move to the Haggs he had established a milk round in Eastwood. It was with financial support from his his mother - "in anticipation of of his inheritance" - that he began farming. Some while previous to his 1898 successful application for the Haggs Farm tenancy he had failed in an application for the neighbouring Felley Farm.In that application he was described as living at the Breach, being a dairyman, was young(he was near thirty)and that he was married.Among his referees he included Dr.Barber,Henry Saxton and Mr.Brentnall of Eastwood.Another(surviving)child had born to to the couple whilst in Eastwood,Molly, born in 1895.On October 13th 1898,six months after the move to the Haggs the birth of another child,Jonathon David, completed the Chambers family.

A rental document dated shortly after the commencement of the Haggs Farm tenancy shows Edmund Chambers holding just more than twenty acres in Greasley,a little more than John Leivers' eventual final rented acreage.( The Greasley land was two fields opposite Greasley church where Lawrence helped with hay making.)
Estate records suggest that initially at least Mr.Chambers had problems regarding his land.He complained that his land was over-run with rabbits and gave notice to quit with effect from Lady day 1903 - a notice subseqently withdrawn.About the same time he again applied for the tenancy of Felley Farm and also for that of another unspecified farm that had been previously in the occupation of John Bentley. Towards the end of 1903 he had written to the Melbourne Estate's agent complaining about his rent relative to the (low)quality of his land.He also had acknowledged a promise of a supply of "basic Slag" that he required as a fertiliser. He had previously written,"the grass requires something more than yard manure to pull it round".A further request of his landlord was the

Elsewhere in this Lenton Sands Lawrence Photostream is a picture of the Chambers Family at Haggs Farm taken on June 29th 1899 . It is reproduced from its original by courtesy of Mrs.Ann ( Chambers ) Howard its then owner . ]

In that photograph the Chambers family members are : -
Rear : Edmund Chambers ( father - wearing hat. ) [born 1863]
All others - left to right : May [born 1883] ; Bernard [b.1890] ; Molly - little girl [b.1896]
Sarah Ann - mother holding baby [b. 1859] ; David - baby on Mother's knee.[b.1898}
Jessie - kneeling [ b.1887 ] ; Hubert - boy [ b.1888 ] ; Allen - at extreme right [b.1882]

A rental dated shortly after the commencement of the Haggs Farm tenancy shows Edmund Chambers holding
just more than twenty acres in Greasley,a little more than John Leivers' eventual final rented acreage.( The
land may have been the two fields opposite Greasley church where Lawrence helped with hay making.) Estate records suggest that initially at least Mr.Chambers had problems regarding his land.He complained that his land was over-run with rabbits and gave notice to quit with effect from Lady day 1903 - a notice subseqently withdrawn.About the same time he again applied for the tenancy of Felley Farm and also for that of another unspecified farm that had been previously in the occupation of John Bentley. who's watching who

I've been absent from flickr lately, but a promotion, new baby, and other things tend to put photography on the back burner a little....

This is a shot from my trip to Virginia Beach this summer for work....

On another note, I will be switching from Olympus to Nikon soon... My gear is on the way as we speak.... Olympus has been good to me and I wouldn't be where I am without it, but I felt like it was time for a change....

I'm thankful for everyone I've met in some of the Olympus groups and will keep checking in and following their streams.....

Wish me luck! :)
