Heinz means business with “Buy and Build” strategy.
H.J.Heinz Co are set to continue “buy and build” strategy in emerging markets, looking for businesses and brands that will “enhance growth in their core categories of ketchup and sauces and infant nutrition.” CEO William Johnson went onto state that the company will focus on the Brazillian, Turkish and Vietnamese markets for growth opportunities.
William Johnson joined Campbell Soup CEOs as speakers at the Consumer Analyst Group conference this week. Even though Campbell Soup have a 69% share in the US market that Heinz are based in, they remained vague in their plans for growth outside of the States. In stark comparison Johnson was keen to emphasise that almost two-thirds of the company’s sales now come from outside the US. During the presentation he predicted that emerging markets could generate about 30% of total sales within four to five years. Johnson confirmed that in order to reach the 30% target the company would employ both organic and acquisition-based growth strategies. He went onto say that “I’ve never seen more opportunities as we are seeing right now. In fact, we have actually pushed some back, because we simply can’t handle them from the capability standpoint.”
When Campbell Soup are only beginning to entertain ideas of entering the Russian and Chinese markets, both Heinz’s sales and attitude are years ahead. The company acquired soy-sauce manufacturer Foodstar from Transpac Industrial Holdings Ltd. for $165 million in November 2010 with the intent expand in China. Chief Financial Officer Art Winkleblack told investors at the time that Heinz plans to generate at least 20 percent of total sales from emerging markets by 2013, up from 15 percent in the current period.
Heinz have certainly been putting the man hours in to their expansion: one-third of the company’s 35,000 employees are working in China, and the company plans for business in the Far East to double in size during the next three years.
And it seems Johnson’s confidence has been rubbing off on the consumers of Heinz products. In November 2010 a company report showed an 8.6 percent gain in second-quarter profit that beat analysts’ estimates as sales in emerging markets soared. Johnson said he expects “very strong” free cash flow of USD 440m for the current quarter, and he raised the outlook for full-year operating free cash flow to USD 1.2bn, up from the previous projection of 1.15bn.
Speaking on the success of Heinz growth, Erin Swanson, a Morningstar analyst said that “While consumer spending remains fragile, we believe Heinz is benefiting from the strength of its brands, as well as marketing and product innovation.”
